EDIT(h)
EDIT(h) is a perfume shop located in a back alley just off Kagurazaka's main street. Nikko Ink, a long-established ink pad brand, has created perfumes that offer new value from the fragrances used in its ink pads. Craftsmen also handcraft the perfume bottles shaped like seals and the paulownia wood boxes. This flagship shop serves as a base for promoting Made in Japan fragrances to the world.
This project involves the renovation of an old house, rather than a new construction. When we first visited the site to inspect it, the finish had been stripped away for reinforcement work, revealing the ancient earthen walls and aged pillars and beams. The method of combining the old with the new to create a new form is consistent with the brand's concept, and we immediately felt the need to "keep what can be preserved and create a space that exposes the underlying foundation." The fixtures are a simple single counter, where customers can enjoy cocktails inspired by the scent of perfume. By designing a space that contrasts the old and new, the two complement each other and blend together, creating a depth that wouldn't be possible with a new building.
We are delighted that the end result is a shop that allows customers to experience the EDIT(h) concept and gently stimulates all five senses.
